SUSTAINABILITY

Blessed with a rich natural environment, Sapporo has been aiming to become a world-class environmental city since it was declared the Environmental Capital of Sapporo in 2008. The city was selected as an SDGs Future City in 2018, certified as a Fair-Trade Town in 2019, and the first city in the country to receive Platinum certification from LEED for Cities and Communities in 2020.

As a destination for business events, we participate in the Global Destination Sustainability Movement, which evaluates cities' environmental initiatives from the perspective of tourism and events, and work with companies and organizations in Hokkaido to reduce the environmental impact of events by proposing original carbon offsets and CSR programs to contribute to creating a sustainable city.

Hokkaido’s sprawling natural and rural areas provide an abundance of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, and Sapporo is the island’s economic center and industry hub, home to food production companies, as well as domestic and international distributors. The booming agribusiness in Hokkaido is definitely one to keep an eye on, as it continues to flourish and develop.
