Keep Sapporo Fresh > Offset Your Carbon
Sustainability in events is one of the pre-requisites. Yet, measuring and managing carbon footprint can be very time-intensive and complicated. (FYI: more than 80% of an event’s emissions come from delegate travel)To help minimize the environmental impact of our sector, in partnership with Meetings & Events Sapporo Hokkaido (MESH), we developed a carbon offset program that supports forestation and wildlife preservation programs around Hokkaido.More about the initiative in the attachment.

Global Destination Sustainability Movement announces the 2022 GDS-Index ranking
The Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index), the largest sustainability performance benchmarking program for destinations has announced its annual cities ranking.Sapporo (the only Japanese city participating in the Index) made a 7% improvement from the previous year, with the total score of 59%. Among the top performers were the 6 years in a row champion Gothenburg (93%), Copenhagen (87%), Helsinki (83%), with Goyang (78%) and Melbourne (77%) leading the Asia Pacific region.The GDS-Index evaluates member cities based on a revised and comprehensive set of 70 quantitative and qualitative criteria that assess four key areas of the sustainability performance of a destination: the city’s environmental strategy and infrastructure, its social sustainability performance, industry supplier support, and the destination management organization’s strategy and initiatives.
