Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido, but just by getting out little way into the surrounding area, you can enjoy a vast wilderness. Lake Shikotsuko, which is in the running to be the clearest lake in Japan, is about one hour by car and the Niseko area, which is popular for outdoor sports, is also very close being about two hours by car.
