Sapporo has a population of 1.8 million and is the largest city north of Tokyo. Nonetheless, there is abundant greenery even in the downtown area and the city boasts by far the most parks and recreation spaces of any city in Japan. Moerenuma Park designed by world famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi is a popular location for events of all kinds; in Yurigahara Park copious well-tended flowers bloom throughout the year; and at Takino Suzuran Hillside Park excellent facilities can be enjoyed in both summer and winter seasons. There is a varied selection of modern and traditional accommodation at the famous Jozankei hot spring resort area which is one hour by car from the downtown city area. The perfect place to relax and soak after visiting one of Sapporo's internationally regarded ski areas.
