History and culture plan
It was in 1870 that the Meiji Government established the Hokkaido Development Commission, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. At the time, the indigenous Ainu people were already living on the island. Full-scale development of Hokkaido started when experts were invited from America who cooperated in the urban planning of Sapporo. The land of Hokkaido was developed by ambitious pioneers who had migrated from various parts of Honshu to the south. Now Sapporo is a modern city of 1.9 million residents making it the 5th largest in Japan. If you want to come into contact with the history and culture of the Ainu and Hokkaido, we recommend visiting the Historical Museum of Hokkaido and the Historical Village of Hokkaido before anywhere else. We also recommend visiting the Exhibition Room of Northern Peoples and the following historical spots: the Old Batchelor Residence (Botanical Gardens of Hokkaido University), the Clock Tower, and the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (also known as Akarenga).
